I Love The Coastal Communities Near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Someday we’ll be spending months at a time at one of the small communities near the coast with

easy access to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. I’m hoping we’ll find something within about 1 hour

driving time for easy day trips back and forth. We don’t want to miss our annual Christmas dinner

with our friends at the Cafe Roma in Puerto Vallarta. That’s what Bucerias retirement is all about.

We’ve been up and down the coast the past few years. We keep seeing interesting places..Boca de

Tomatlan, Mismaloya,Punta Mita, Bucerias, Rincon Guayabitos…We’ve missed a few.

I saw a story recently, after returning from our last trip of course, about Sayulita to the north

of Puerto Vallarta about an hour away. Oh, there’s that magical hour limit of mine. On the list

to check out next trip. We’ve been close by several times, but never right at Sayulita. This is

apparently a wonderful funky little community that caters to surfers as well as all kinds of

regular visitors of course.

Mexican developers have a great opportunity, I think in building smaller retirement

accomodations, all along the coast, near Puerto Vallarta to cater to people like ourselves who

want affordable accomodation.

Creating small pod-like clusters of homes or buildings within these communities will allow

couples and families to retire in close proximity and socialize and help each but still feel

fully independent. I’m sure I got that pod term from the whale watching that’s available off the

coast in Mexico)

The Baby Boomers will flood this marketplace over the next 10 years. I’d just like to get in

ahead of the rest of them.

“Mexico beach vacations” is the most searched for combination of words in search engines related to

Mexico. The pace of life, the sun and the cerveza or margaritas are a great

combination for a short or long term vacation or winter stay.

So whether it’s for a longer term winter visit or just a great vacation, I’ll pass on my planning

tip. The high season is now over and owners would like some cash flow.

Decouple your air fare from your accomodations and go a la carte this time. Book now for next

year, pay a deposit and get the best deal on accomodations. Now you both have something to look

The Canary Islands are the remnants of the break up of the African and South American continents many millions of years ago. And even today these seven specks of Spain are still home to a mixture of Latin and African influences – along with a hefty dash of Iberian spirit for good measure.

Lanzarote is the most easterly link in this chain of islands and hence the closest to the West African coastline. Lying roughly 70 miles away from Moroccan ports such as Tarfaya and the outer fringes of the Sahara desert.

But parts of Lanzarote resemble another world altogether. As the island was subjected to the worlds longest ever volcanic eruption. Which lasted for six years from 1730 and which left around one quarter of the island buried beneath a sea of lava.

As a result, much of Lanzarote´s terrain is often likened to the surface of the moon. Indeed Apollo 13 astronauts were shown pictures of the famous Volcano Park at Timanfaya – the islands most popular tourist attraction – in order to better prepare them for their lunar landings.

However in reality the volcanic region of the island likes more like a land just formed – supporting little in the way of vegetation or fauna beyond lichen and lizards.

However, the same can not be said for the rest of the island – which boasts 90 plus golden sand beaches and some spectacular, verdant scenery. Such as the palm packed valleys around Haria and Maguez.

Consequently, Lanzarote is perennially popular with tourists – and welcomes over one million visitors from Britain and Ireland alone annually. Drawn by the islands year round clement climate – with a temperature that rarely falls below 20c and with an average of just six rainfall days a year.

Many visitors love the island so much that they choose to stay on – or invest in a holiday home or apartment – creating a buoyant market for Lanzarote property that shows little sign of abating.

Unlike many other Spanish sunspots Lanzarote remains relatively unspoiled – despite its popularity as a tourist destination. This is largely thanks to the influence of an island born artist and architect called Cesar Manrique. Who did much to shape the islands evolution and save it from a burial beneath a sea of four star hotels.

Manrique was studying art and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Andy Warhol in New York when package tourism started to take off in Spain back in the 1960´s. Fearful for the fate of his beloved island he returned to crusade for a more ecologically friendly approach – a stance that was fairly revolutionary in Franco’s Spain at that time.

Along with the help of an old family friend - and leader of the island government – called Pepin Ramirez, Manrique illuminated an alternative path for the development of tourism. And campaigned successfully against high rise buildings, road side advertising hoardings and non-traditional forms of architecture.

And whilst other destinations built golf courses and water parks Manrique instead sought to create a unique set of tourist and cultural attractions – by fusing his artistic instinct with the islands natural beauty.

The first manifestation of his philosophy was the incredible Jameos del Agua. Where in a hitherto neglected part of the island, he turned a giant collapsed lava tube into a stunning, subterranean auditorium.

Tropical gardens, bars and a restaurant surround an underground lagoon. The atmosphere is hushed and cathedral like. Blind albino crabs glisten in the water like pearls.
Movie legend Rita Hayworth declared the Jameos del Agua “the eighth wonder of the world.”

And to the amazement of many skeptical islanders she became one of a legion of rich A-listers – such as Peter Sellers and Omar Sharif – who were suddenly drawn to this unique new holiday hot spot.

Manrique created eight of these unique attractions until his untimely death in 1992. All of them are still enormously popular tourist sites today. In addition he designed hotels, bars, restaurants and undertook many other private projects on the island.

As a result his influence is visible everywhere. Lanzarote became his canvas. Even roundabouts on the island are adorned with his giant wind sculptures. In recognition of his achievements UNESCO declared Lanzarote a protected biosphere in 1994. The first island in the world to achieve such status.

Southwest Germany is a region of outstanding beauty with numerous forests, lakes and waterfalls. Tourism is the chief industry in the Black Forest in Baden-Wurttemberg on the edge of the Rhine river. The wooded, mountainous area has several tall peaks, the tallest of which is the Feldberg, standing at 1,493m. The trees are mainly pines and firs, some of which are grown on a commercial scale. Unfortunately, the forest has been depleted due to mass logging and the effects of acid rain. The Lothar Cyclone in 1999 also did its share of damage, destroying acres of trees on the tops of mountains.

Five rivers, including the River Danube and its source, run through the Black Forest. There are paths to cater for hikers, mountain bikers and cross country skiers. The area is a haven for wildlife, including owls and eagles. Other more unusual animals are to be found due to commercial enterprise. Visitors can ride a camel at Rotfelden and ostriches are reared on a farm at St. Peter.

There is a tradition of regional cuisine in the area and some food items have become internationally famous. Black Forest Gateaux is still on the menus around the world. The original chocolate cake recipe is still adhered to in the land of its birth with ingredients including whipped cream, cherries and liqueur. Black Forest Ham is also popular at home and abroad. The smoked ham is seasoned with pepper, juniper berries, coriander, garlic and other spices.

Culture and history are celebrated in the region. This can be seen at the open air museum named Vogtsbauernhofe. It re-creates the life of 16th and 17th century farmers with replica farms. There is a long history of making timepieces in Germany and the German Clock Museum at Furtwangen traces the history of clock making and watch making. The collection includes cuckoo clocks, musical clockworks and mechanical musical instruments.

One of the most popular towns in the Black Forest is Baden-Baden. The 83m telecommunications tower, known as the Fremersberg Tower dominates the skyline. The view can be taken from the observation deck and there is an adjacent restaurant. The town contains the Festspielhaus, which is the largest opera house and concert hall in Germany. Major opera and ballet productions are staged there. The town has a fascinating history, as can be seen at the ruins of the Roman Baths and the Hohenbaden castle ruins dating back to 1102.

You are probably considering the travel industry as a home based career choice because travel is fun and always in demand. If that is the way you think, you are absolutely right! Starting your own home based travel business requires a little research.

The research is actually pretty simple, and I will tell you exactly what I did to get started; I asked a friend a few questions, and then I went to a timeshare presentation. That’s it! End of research. Now here are the details.

A friend of mine has five kids and he travels to the same beach each year with the whole family. So I asked him, “How much does your resort cost each year?” He did not mind telling me at all that it was around $3,500 for a one week stay each year, plus their travel costs, which were relatively low since they always drove.

I then told him how his family could stay at a higher quality luxury resort for $3,500 this year, and for only $300 to $800 per week each year thereafter, and in a wide variety of higher quality international resorts. That was a real eye opener for him.

Now remember, this was research, and for research reasons alone, the fact that my friend was recently unemployed was a plus, as I knew that he was not in a position to buy a membership right now. He had already booked the family vacation for this year, but was more than glad to know about my discount luxury resort membership, and that he could travel during any week of the year, or even multiple times each year at the same weekly rate.

My conclusion for this research was that I was in the right business. Here is research scenario two: I went to a timeshare presentation. I have avoided these for years, because everyone knows that the high pressure sales techniques of the timeshare sales force have turned many a No into a Yes.

True to form, those very nice timeshare sales professionals turned into pit bulls during the course of the presentation. I went through four managers on account of my unyielding No, and they even employed the good cop/bad cop technique on me.

Their last offer was substantially better than the initial offer (from $55,000 down to $14,000), but they mentioned the word ‘upgrade’ way to frequently. There was no getting over the math; timeshare ownership was a substantially inferior investment when compared to the timeshare alternative I was selling from my humble home office.

This was exceptionally valuable information for me. I have never owned a timeshare, but the condo and maintenance fees associated with ownership, compounded by blackout weeks, exchange fees and upgrade charges, really helped me to understand why so many people I know that love to travel have negative feelings toward timeshare ownership.

So there it is. Your research may be a little different, but you get the idea; ask questions and talk to people about their travel habits.

Go to places that may enhance your understanding of the travel industry, such as golf, ski, wilderness or beach resorts, or maybe even a tour of a cruise ship if that is available.

Count the costs, see what customers see, get educated, and then start your own home based travel business.
